General Information
After a two-year break, we’re gearing up for our 4th (or so) annual Twin Oaks Summer Camp. This year we've expanded our activities to at least four days a week (three days of workshops and one field trip day) throughout the summer. We’ll be holding activities from MID-JUNE THROUGH END OF AUGUST.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Twin Oaks Community, here is a brief description:

We are an intentional community of around 75 adults and 15 children living on 465 acres of farm and forest land in rural Virginia, between Charlottesville & Richmond. Since the community's beginning in 1967, our way of life has reflected our values of cooperation, sharing, nonviolence, equality, and ecology. We do not have a group religion or a central leader. For further information about the community see our homepage.

We are going for the "Never Ending Summer Camp". We envision this as the beginning of activities with children that will continue on through the year as we evolve into some form of homeschooling cooperative.

Various members of Twin Oaks Community are leading practically all of the workshops (in the future we hope for activities led by more non-Twin Oaks members). More than half of the participants will be non-Twin Oaks children. We look forward to these parents bringing their energy by assisting with activities, helping with meal preparation, etc.

Camp Preview Extravanganza will be on Friday, June 15, 1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. It is open to anyone interested in previewing camp activities. There will be demos and samples of finished crafts that will be made in the various workshops throughout the summer, plus opportunities to try out activities. It will also provide opportunities for children and adults to contribute ideas which might influence the content of the workshops. Come with a snack to share with the group.

Camp Workshops will generally happen three days a week (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) from June 20 to August 23.

Typically there will be 3 WORKSHOP SESSIONS PER DAY. Most are 1.5 hours with some 1 or 2 hrs. The actual time may vary, depending on the interest of participants.

NUMBER OF SESSIONS PER WORKSHOP: Many workshops will be one session, with a few being two to six sessions - however, the number of sessions may change as needed.

AGES: Generally five to twelve years of age, though older children and adults are welcome to participate. Some workshops have a starting age above five (see the Detailed Schedule).

Most of the workshops have a Size Limitation . However, if some workshops are extra popular, we may schedule additional group sessions.

The Locations of the workshops will be at various areas at Twin Oaks. The first few weeks will be held at our conference site and some other weeks at more central community locations.

Lunch and Story/Music Time will typically be from 12:00 to 1:30 during the Wed.-Fri. workshop days, when children can gather for stories, group songs or skits. Lunch will be provided for a fee ($2.00) or children can bring their own.

In addition to the Wed-Fri workshops, there will be either a canoe trip or field trip each week

  • Canoe Trips are scheduled on a few Tuesdays 1:30-5:30 on the South Anna river at Twin Oaks.
  • Field Trips are planned on other Tuesdays. Three of them are 2- or 3-day trips (Sun, Mon, Tue).

-----------------------------------------------

Three Extended Field Trips (2-3 days each) are planned:

  • Mountain Hiking/Camping June 24-26

  • Beach Camping July 15-17

  • Washington DC Camping Trip August 19-21

Once a month OVERNIGHT TENT CAMPOUTS (with dinner & breakfast) are planned around Full Moon nights (with no workshops scheduled the following mornings). We may schedule additional overnight campouts if the interest is high.

You can also check with us about camping with your children at our conference site throughout the summer.

COOKOUTS (5:30 p.m.– 8:00 p.m.) will be every 2nd & 4th Thursday of July and Aug.

HOMESCHOOL WORKSHOP July 14, Saturday, 1:00 – 5:00. For people interested in homeschooling (experienced or not). The over-arching theme will be homeschooling, and the individual topics discussed will be determined by the interests of the participants. Open Space Technology is the meeting tool we will use to enable the group to quickly and easily self-organize. This workshop would likely be of most interest to adults and older children. Childcare will be provided. No charge for this workshop.
