Objective of the internship:
To support the organizing and implementation of children's camps at Twin Oaks which usually occur in the spring and occaisionally in the summer and fall, and communal children's activities during non-camp times. Read details about upcoming and past camps.

Length And Dates Of Internship
Flexible: 1-6 months between March and November. There will be a three-week trial period.

Job/Task Description And Responsibilities:
Before the camps:
Preparing the physical site
Setting up the basic schedule structure
Meal planning

During the camps:
Leading or assisting in workshops/activities with the children
Basically being a camp counselor
Other miscellaneous activities around running a camp

After the camps:
Clean up

With Twin Oaks children: organizing, leading or assisting with recreational activities, academic tutoring, conflict resolution, and community work Planning for future camps.

What will the intern learn during the internship?

  • Planning and implementing children's camps.
  • Gaining experience with a variety of group activities with children
  • In addition, there are over 200 tasks scheduled weekly in the community: from bee keeping to software development, from cheese making to retail sales and lots in between.

Other details of working conditions: Each intern will have their own bedroom in one of our residential buildings, though during the two one-week camp sessions, intern might be asked to camp out. When camp is not in session there will be more time to be involved in a variety of other community work

Applicant requirements: Love and respect for children, enjoyment of interacting with them, and a playful spirit are the highest requirements. The ability to take children's needs and wants seriously, and thereby not resorting to authoritarian methods. Prefer those with experience working with groups of children. Experience and skills in the following areas (especially with children) would be useful: camping/backpacking skills, environmental education, cooperative games, group sports, crafts, drawing, painting, drama, music, creative writing, story-telling, conflict resolution.

For the upcoming May camps: We are particularly interested in those who have had prior experience working with children in drama and/or outdoor recreation activities (camping, hiking, nature, etc.) or at least have a strong interest in one of these areas.
