So
Long Twin OaksFor almost two months, Ryoo, Jung Gil from Korea was a joy to have around. He spent time in prison as a student activist, is currently the Secretary General of the Buddhist Academy for Ecological Awakening, and is peaceful, kind, and intelligent. Despite a huge language barrier, his openness and confidence allowed him to pick up work anywhere in the community and fit right into the social scene. It is a tribute to the flexible and notorious nature of Twin Oaks that we were blessed with such an amazing international visitor. editor I arrived at Twin Oaks on 5 Jan 2001. I had only visited America twice in the past. I felt strained and frightened living with Americans at first. Moreover I can't speak English well. But here I am.
I am researching several ideas about creating community. So, in spite of a broken language, I wanted to visit Twin Oaks Community. It was difficult to decide whether to come here. If I stayed in Korea, I would be busy making phone calls, writing articles and reports, and going to meetings. But now, it is so relaxing to wake up seeing sunlight through my window in the morning. I can't believe the tranquil life I've been living here. As much as I could, I tried to watch and learn about Twin Oaks. My visiting principle is "Don't Judge, Just Watch" and "My mind is in tune with others, My work is the best it can be." I tried to approach everything in this way. In my country and my community, we think it is important how we handle our minds and our emotions. Twin Oaks is well-structured. I am impressed with everything and I learned and felt very much. But, two months is too short for me to know fully. I think to appreciate Twin Oaks Community, I would have to live here a long time. The atmosphere of Twin Oaks is kind and warm and happy. Naturally, there are some problems. However, real Utopia is not a society to be accomplished, but a process to be engaged in. The process itself is real happiness and real utopia. During my short time here, I wish to thank everyone for the opportunity to feel the beauty and to gather my impressions of Twin Oaks. Thanks (I)an-ok, Rollie, Ted, and Heather for teaching me English. Thanks Marione especially in guiding me to other communities as well as giving me special consideration; I am impressed by her various Movement Support activities. Thanks to Eric and Valerie who gave me a chance to come here. When I was embarrassed, Thea, Ione, Frodo, Mala and Hawina's smiles and assistance made me comfortable. Although he speaks fast, Paxus is smart. Whenever I see him, I feel so good. And thanks Ezra and Mele for attention. Thanks to the people of my visitor period. And thanks to all Twin Oaks folks. The compensation of your attention is that you assist in spreading the idea of community. I'll leave Twin Oaks this Sunday 18 Feb. Afterwards, I'll stay at Catholic Workers' House in New York for 5 days. Then I will go to Seoul, Korea. After about 10 days, living at Twin Oaks will become a memory of the past for me. But please don't forget that the existence of Twin Oaks Community gives a vision and a dream to other people to make a better future. |

I can't forget the beauty of bright stars and the Milky Way in the night sky on the road between MT and the courtyard. I can't forget the silky night wind . I can't forget the moonlight in the branches when I walk from Tupelo. I can't forget the red sky on the hammock weaving in the courtyard. I can't forget how chilly it was when I made kits at EC. I can't forget the loud music when I was doing KII. I can't forget the smell of burning wood in Aurora. I can't forget the voices singing at Beechside and Pagan songs in TCLR. I can't forget the stories and songs in the car with Marione when I went to Yogaville. |
I can't forget the moving sky when I rocked
in the hammock in the courtyard, and the vapor trails of the airplanes. I can't forget the coffee fragrance in the I can't forget the wood scent in upstairs Ta Chai and the books' scents in upstairs Oneida. I can't forget the cookies' fragrance in Llano kitchen. I can't forget Sky's and Spot's delightful dancing and shouting against Bush at the inauguration demonstration in Washington DC. I can't forget the storage barn scenery out the window of my room. And I can't forget two dogs and a squirrel up a tree and babies laughing and playing in the yard and . . . and . . . and . . . How can I forget these? Ryoo, Jung Gil |
