The Leaves of Twin Oaks Summer 2001 - Page 5
Twin Oaks in Bloom by Jay Kawatski
Jay, sibling to longterm-member Jake Kawatski, is a new member who lived in the wilderness of Bristish Columbia for 21 years; he has brought much knowledge of wilderness survival, homesteading skills and country craft to Twin Oaks. Several months ago he was kind enough to be rousted out of bed at 3am to butcher a deer that some Twin Oakers had hit on their way home from Louisa; he completed the task with a two-inch pocket knife. -- Editor

On Aug. 22nd, Jake and I drove Dragon Wagon to Wisconsin for a family gathering, where, for the first time all 14 of theKawatski siblings were together in one place. Ranging in age from 35 to 60, all are the children of Mary and Ned Kawatski.

While in WI, Jake and I spent about 50 hrs digging daffodil and narcissus bulbs which I had been propagating on land rented from his mother. DW could only carry about 600 lbs, so nearly 700 lbs were shipped UPS to Twin Oaks.

Now, Jake and I have the task of planting over 20,000 flower bulbs on the Twin Oaks property. We have picked the field next to the Sewage Treatment Plant as a landing ground for most of them.

I began with a few dozen bulbs which I grew in Northwestern British Columbia in 1980. When I moved to WI in ’94, I shipped about 500 lbs of bulbs as well and made MK’s Belly Acres Farm famous for it’s spring blooms. Cut flower sales plus sales of organically grown vegetables provided me with a good income from ’95 until I moved to TO last Fall.
We took less than half of the bulbs that were growing, so many will remain to bloom there. I also left bulbs behind in the wilderness of B.C. so the bears and moose can enjoy their beauty.

P.S. Mary Kawatski donated to Twin Oaks a set of regulation size horse-shoes for pitching. The horse-shoe pits are set up now, parallel to the driveway near the volleyball court. Fred has shown a lot of interest in the horseshoes and Maggie has good aim. It remains to be seen just who will win the trophy at next year’s Louisa County Fair
