Gathering 2008 Organizer: To Be Announced

Who We Are: Twin Oaks is a community of around 105 people, aged 1-80. We are striving to live according to our values of cooperation, non-violence, sharing and equality. Since 1967, we've been learning how to provide for our own needs, both economic and social. Our businesses include making hammocks and rope chairs, making tofu, and indexing books. We grow much of our own food, and provide ourselves with many services, freeing ourselves some from dependence on the larger economy. This gathering was created by the women of Twin Oaks in order to connect us with women outside of our geographic community.

Sharing Responsibility: We'd like to invite you to participate in the creation of the gathering. The week prior to the Gathering (16-22 August) will be devoted to final site preparation. Call us and arrange to come early, help us get set up and be a part of making it happen! We'll have t-shirts for women who work l0 hours or take on an area of responsibility. We also ask all participants to work about 3 hours during the Gathering or stay after to help clean up.

Food: Twin Oaks will provide Breakfast, Lunch, bread, milk yogurt, salad and much more. Dinners will be potluck. Please bring a potluck dish (enough for 10 hungry women), fruit and a snack or juice. If you can, bring a dish that reflects your heritage. By involving all in advance food preparation, we will take all women out of the kitchen in the evenings! We have facilities for refrigerating and reheating the food you bring. Twin Oaks will provide salads, fruit, bread, breakfasts and lunches (all vegetarian). Please label the ingredients in your potluck dish to assist women with special dietary needs.

Bring: Tent, sleeping bag, towel, flashlight, raingear, warm & cool clothes, bug repellent, sunscreen, and a potluck dish (see Food). No pets, alcohol, or illegal drugs, please. Consider bringing musical instruments, games, and literature to share.

Childcare: Boys under 5 and all girls are welcome to attend; collective childcare will be provided.

Special Needs: If you have questions about accessibility for differently abled women or sign language interpreting, call or write us.

Location: Near Interstate 64, between Richmond and Charlottesville, 100 miles south of Washington, D.C. When we receive your registration we'll send you a detailed map and travel information.

Registration: The fee is $75 with a sliding scale of $40-$140. Girls over 14 are considered adults. Paying in the upper region of the scale helps subsidize women who can pay less. Please let us know if money is a real problem; we want the conference to be accessible to all women. We have a space limitation of 150, so register early; it will help us in planning a great gathering for you. Please submit your registration form and mail the fee before August 10; we cannot guarantee space to late registrations.

Gathering Site: Our rustic retreat site is in the woods away from the main community area. A large fire circle sits in the center, and hammocks, picnic tables and two showers border the site. Electricity and water are available (no hook-ups). We have ample camping and meeting sites and a river for swimming; it is a safe environment for optional nudity. Limited space will be available for sales of womanmade crafts; please email, call or write in advance if you wish to sell your work.

Our Vision of the Gathering

This will be our 25th year of coming together at Twin Oaks to celebrate our connections, our creativity, and our strength as women in all our diversity—race, age, class, shape/weight, parents/non-parents, orientation, spirituality, and more. We will offer workshops to celebrate each other. If you would like to lead a workshop or activity, please let us know early. We will a Saturday night sharing stage. Please share your culture and creativity! You don't need to be perfect or professional—we guarantee a supportive audience. Throughout the weekend there will be opportunities to relax, swim in the river, enjoy the mudpit, sweat hut, hammocks and the company of women. The gathering will begin with registration at 4 p.m. on Friday. Women space ends Monday at 10:00 a.m.

To register, fill out and submit our online registration form (or print out and mail the form.)
