There are lots of stories about Adela, but there is one which is most often told.
Shortly after the wall came down, a friend of Adela's approached her and said "Now we can do things which we have not been able to do for over 40 years. What should we do?" Adela barely paused and replied "We should rob a bank."
They went to the local bank in Cheb [a Czech border town, near Germany, where Adela grew up]. They approached the teller and said "We are from the student radio station [which was true] and we are here to test your security systems [which was not] - this is a robbery, give us all your money." The bank teller, who was not impressed with these teenage criminal wanna-bes, shewed them out of the bank.
Twenty minutes later, they returned with shirts pulled up over their faces, fingers under their shirts like guns and said "This time we are not fooling around, give us the money." This time the security guard was not fooling around and grabbed them both. After a brief discussion, they were deposited in the bank presidents office.
Adela is unusually charming. Within about 20 minutes, she had the bank president laughing about the situation. After 40 minutes, the door to the bank presidents office burst open and six police stormed in guns drawn. "We hear there is a robbery in progress", said one f them breathlessly. "You are a bit late" said the bank prez, who went on to tell them that they should attend other problems and that he had this one under control.
The bank prez made a deal with Adela after he dispatched the police. He made her promise that she would retire from bank robbery and not go to the press with the fact that the police took he better part of an hour to respond to a robbery which was taking place next door to the police station, then he would not press charges. Adela agreed that she would seek other career paths and walked off with just a warning.
It turns out that Adela's partner in crime, Justin, would grow up to be one of the most popular TV news anchor personalities in the country. He was young, dashing and well connected - thus regularly breaking stories of corruption which plagued this country "in transition". But as Mr. Zimmermann sez "his past was close behind."
He was chasing a corruption story having to do with privatization. He was closing in on those who had ripped off the state. And he recieved a mysterious unsigned warning. "If you go forward with this investigation, we will go public with your bank robbing past." Justin being the sort to rally to such a challenge, did the regular news show the next evening. But instead of reading the teleprompter, he told the story of his escapade with Adela. His ratings soared, and ultimately the privatization fraud was broken.
